Gas Trip Cost Calculator
Total gas money for the trip, what each person owes, and how many tanks you will burn — with fill-up bookkeeping for the return math.
Total fuel cost$58.66
Per person$19.55
Fuel needed16.1 gal
Cost per mile$0.13
total = distance ÷ mpg × price · per person = total ÷ people
Fill-up bookkeeping: if one driver pays for all the gas, add up the amounts at the pump rather than estimates — a receipt total is the number you split. If you only know the dollar amount and the price, gallons = amount ÷ price, which is how you back-check the pump counter against the dash.
Fair splits: equal per-person splits assume everyone rode the whole way. For partial riders, split by segment miles: person owes (their miles ÷ total miles) × total fuel cost.
RV and tow numbers: towing at 65 mph can halve your normal MPG. If the trip involves a trailer, use the tow MPG — the trailer tax is real, plan for the truck number not the label number.

Frequently asked questions
How do you split gas money on a road trip?
Add up the total fuel cost for the trip (keep the pump receipts), then divide by the number of people sharing the cost. Everyone rides, everyone chips in — $138.21 split 3 ways is $46.07 each.
How much gas do I need for a 450-mile trip?
At 28 mpg you need about 16.1 gallons — roughly one fill-up in a mid-size car, or a fill-up plus a top-off in a truck. Budget $58.65 at $3.65/gal.
How do I calculate gas cost from a dollar amount?
Divide the receipt amount by the price per gallon to get gallons: $40.00 at $3.65 = 10.96 gallons. Then multiply by the trip MPG to see how far that took you, or divide by miles driven for the real MPG.
Is it fair to split gas equally if someone joined halfway?
Equal splits are simplest for full-trip riders. For partial riders, split proportionally: their miles ÷ total trip miles × total fuel cost. This calculator gives you the total; the per-segment math is one multiplication.
